Social Media is Killing Your Happiness

Hi everyone, I hope you all are well and staying in! I have been wanting to write about social media for a long time. Social media is sort of a double whammy. We need it especially in these days to stay connected to people and not lose our sanity. For models, make-up artists, self-employed people, etc. we need it for our jobs and advertising, well, basically yourself. Social media has its pluses, it really is a platform with the whole world attached one fingertip away. It has the power of making you known to the world and it really is the gateway for new news and information to be shown and known to all. However, when do we lay down our phones, tablets, and computers and say enough is enough? I am going to give you five reasons why you should put down your technology faster than ever before.

First of all, Social media can ruin not only your mood, but it can ultimately ruin you. It can make you spiral into such a downward frenzy of unsureness that you second guess if you are even good enough. Do not compare yourself to girls on social media that seem to have their whole lives’ perfect because I promise you they don’t. They are human, and they have flaws. Social media is set up to show and flaunt all the good, but it is not set up to show all the negative in people’s lives. I promise you if it was, you would not spend so many hours online. ;) No person and especially NOT social media should ever let you downgrade yourself like that.

Second of all, in today’s world with so much unknown about coronavirus and even with politics in everyday life, there is SO MUCH fake news. The danger is not that you read it and think it is true, but that we then repost it to our hundreds, thousands, or even millions of followers sharing news that is not even accurate or true in the first place. For example, did you see the video of the guy in China where he falls over dead from the coronavirus? As serious as this virus is and I am personally taking it very seriously, the virus alone does not make you fall over dead on the spot. However, I even watched it and believed it, so don’t fall victim to the fake news.

On the bright side I think a positive about social media is that it can unite people who have never met before and create unity and happiness. However, third of all, I feel social media creates more fear than good these days. We can’t be naive to the things going around us in the world, it is our responsibility as citizens of this earth to stay up to date about the world around us. However, I can assure you that doomsdayers laying on your social media feeds are definitely not spreading any happiness to your world or anyone’s for that matter. Letting negativity flow into your life is making you less happy. Especially with all the news right now, I am not saying be naive about it, but limit your exposure. You deserve to be happy! You deserve the world!

Fourth of all, THINK OF ALL THE THINGS YOU COULD BE DOING with those four hours that you spend scrolling Instagram today. I have been found guilty of this as well, I am not going to lie. When we make excuses though that we don’t have time to do the things we have been wanting to do and start for a long time whether it be reading that book you have had sitting on your shelf for 6 months or start dabbling into learning Spanish. I promise you, if you limit your screen time even just one hour a day it will open up an hour every day to be productive and start to get that thing you have been wanting to do done. It makes more time most importantly for you! Do not look back three years from now and regret not ever achieving those little things you wanted to do for you! Learning a new language or getting more into practicing of meditation will do a lot more for you than those 500 posts you saw on Instagram today. I promise you that. Stop being lazy and stop making excuses and make things happen!

The fifth and last reason to close all technology right now is so you can paint your own reality. This is your life, you can imagine, create, and implement your future! Put time and energy into yourself. Do not let other people and social media drain you, let all your excitement that you have for your goals and future drain you. Spend more time on becoming the person you want to be. You owe yourself that.

All in all, I am not saying ditch social media all together and cut the world off, but know when to stop. Be able to say enough is enough. Take trips for yourself go to music festivals for yourself. Go see the sunrise not just for your Instagram feed, but for your own happiness and joy. Take the positives and ditch the negatives. I promise you focusing even if it is one hour a day now on yourself instead of scrolling through Facebook, you will be grateful you made that change. It is never too late to get into a new routine you have been wanting to start, to start working out, eating healthy, educating yourself, or even just spending time meditating with yourself and discovering more of who you are. Ditching an hour of social media today, can open you to a world of possibilities tomorrow.

With Love,

BB Jean
