ONE MAN'S TRASH, ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE
Hello loves,
I hope everyone had an amazing New Year's Eve and your 2018 is off to a great start! If it isn't so far, well don't worry each day is a new day! You can make tomorrow better than today. :)
Anyways, I came across something disturbing today that I wanted to share with you all. So, I was walking home tonight from a late diner trip (food at 2 a.m. not the best decision, but totally worth it ;) and I came across garbage containers filled with plastic bags. Sticking out outside of those plastic bags were brand new clothes thrown away from a store beside it. The clothes were in perfect condition from socks, to pants, to hats, etc., but most of them contained mutilations. If you don't know what mutilations are, it is when stores purposely put a cut or a hole in clothing in order to keep it from being sold afterwards... Now as I work in the fashion industry and I know that companies mutilate clothes in order for them not to be resold, I do understand to some degree. However though, when it is literally 2 degrees Fahrenheit outside and there are homeless people trying to stay warm on the streets of New York City, and all over the country at this point, why throw away perfectly good articles of clothing? I'm not talking about Gucci or Marc Jacobs, but companies that sell basics that people could greatly benefit from. Not only are lots of clothes being thrown away instead of being used for bigger causes, but all these excess clothes are being thrown into the landfill. Did you know landfills are made up of 21 BILLION POUNDS of textiles each year? Yes 21 BILLION POUNDS!! That's an insane amount which also contributes to global warming. If companies have unused t-shirts, pants, socks, gloves, coats etc. (especially generic unmarked clothing pieces) they should donate the remaining articles to homeless shelters or other organizations such the Red Cross or Salvation Army, where they can put these goods to good use either for people after natural disasters or for people left homeless after local fires in the area. Clothing is a necessity for life, and we shouldn't throw perfectly good clothing away on the street!!! I know I am just one person in this world, but by spreading awareness we can all hopefully make a change and help the people around us that are less fortunate!
